Our Origin Story
Carioca Bowls began with a trip to Rio de Janeiro that left a lasting impression on Richard. What struck him was not just the beauty of the city, but the way people lived in it. Even at midnight, the beaches were full. People were playing volleyball, talking, moving, sharing space together. The energy felt natural and unforced.
The next morning he noticed something everywhere he went: small cafés and juice bars serving thick, deep purple açaí. People of all ages were eating it as part of their everyday routine. When he tried it for the first time, he understood.
Açaí was not treated as a specialty item. It was part of daily life, woven into the rhythm of the city. That experience stayed with him.
Years later, it became the foundation for Carioca Bowls, a place built on the belief that food can energize, bring people together, and create small moments that make a day feel brighter.

Carioca Meaning:
Carioca refers to someone from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and carries a cultural meaning rooted in warmth, ease, and connection to everyday life. It reflects a way of living that values community, balance, and finding joy in simple moments.
Carioca Bowls takes inspiration from that ‘people first’ spirit by focusing on simple, nourishing food and creating a place where everyone feels welcome.
Meet Richard, The Co-Founder of Cairoca Bowls
After finishing business school, Richard moved to Rio de Janeiro, where açaí became part of his daily routine and a central pillar of the city’s vibrant, healthy beach culture. The açaí shops he frequented served as community hubs, sparking a mission that stayed with him long after leaving Brazil.
When he returned to New York City, Richard joined the founders of Sambazon as VP of Business Development, spending 11 years expanding national sales channels and supporting the company’s market-driven conservation work in the Amazon. His time on the road reinforced his vision to bring a Rio-style, community-focused açaí experience to the United States.
After years of planning with his longtime friend Matthew, they opened Carioca Bowls in 2015, designed to elevate every aspect of the açaí experience. The shop represents the synthesis of Richard’s professional background and his personal passion for açaí culture.
Richard is deeply passionate about yoga, tennis, meditation, and mindful living. These practices shape the way he approaches community, business, and daily life, and they continue to influence the atmosphere and values behind Carioca Bowls.
